To write the history of their own life
Even if it has no literary value -
And they did nothing of consequence in it.
The books could all be put in some library somewhere
Like pots in a crematorium, and taken down occasionally
By idlers, or interested parties.
Of course, each autobiography would contain
A great deal of fantasy, particularly in the area
Of self-approbation, but still,
It would be a kind of resource, like old maps
Of places that no longer exist,
Or collections of used bus tickets.
