Mary Chuck began writing poetry when she retired, having listened to wonderful poetry as part of the Contemporary Literature programme at the Wordsworth Trust, where she is currently a Trustee. She helped to establish the Dove Cottage Poets and continues to support this group on-line. 'Other Worlds' is Mary's debut collection of poems.
She writes, reads, and shares poetry with a number of different groups in Grasmere, Cumbria, Warrington, and on a variety of residential courses.
Her poems have been published in The North, Cannon’s Mouth, Poetry Salzburg Review, Envoi, Artemis and various anthologies. She is also a Primary School Governor.
Other Worlds by Mary Chuck
“This is a remarkable collection. Despite the obvious love of language and though there’s real skill in how they are put together, the poems are first of all and above all genuinely interested in the world around them. That is rare, and rare too that this is such a well-travelled book that looks closely, with insight and precision, and reports back in a way that is clear-eyed and utterly compelling.”
Peter Sansom, Co-director of The Poetry Business
“Other Worlds is a collection in perpetual motion, one in which, whenever the documented journeys pause for breath, the imagination keeps moving. Our guide is a compassionate, connected and keenly alert poet who weighs both the elemental pleasures of life against varying degrees of personal and political tragedy. This is honest, direct, tender and highly assured writing. Mary Chuck is a poet who we meet head on, listen to and come away better for the experience. ”
John Lindley, poet and creative writing tutor
“Clear-eyed energy fuels Other Worlds. Here are beautifully realised things – a briefcase, ascrewdriver, old trainers – capturing a trek, a stranger, a way of life, family holidays, someone lost. Aleppo, Grasmere, Mosul, Calais, mountain porters, refugees … Histories collide. The way Mary Chuck sees the world has taken me places and part of me is still both here and in the other worlds’ that spin through these poems.”Susan Allen, Community Outreach Officer, Wordsworth Grasmere
