'Over the Road' by Dennis Tomlinson
Over the Road is Dennis Tomlinson's second poetry pamphlet, following Sleepless Nights (Maverick Mustang Manuscripts, 2019). His poems, including haiku, have appeared in a wide variety of little magazines, in anthologies and on websites such as Ink, Sweat and Tears. Poems translated from German authors have appeared in journals including Acumen. He has worked as a translator and a postman but took early retirement in 2020 and is now a full-time carer. He also appeared on BBC Mastermind in 2016, reaching the semi-final.
"Whatever happened? asks Tomlinson. Plenty.
With his succinct style, he takes us from the plot of childhood to student digs and foreign destinations. Dennis' method is that of a snapper who captures the scene, then closes his jaws. This is a confident pamphlet from a one-of-a-kind poet."
— Gareth Writer-Davies
"They say that good things come in small packages (diamonds for instance) and that certainly applies in this case. And there is something diamond-like about Tomlinson’s short, highly compressed and witty poems. […]
Many of the poems trace journeys that are both geographical and psychological. The sequencing of the poems means that they build up over time and it allows the reader to follow the connections that link together the chain of insights and memories.
Tomlinson is especially adept at precisely capturing the texture of everyday experience in the urban environment .."
