FAQ 1 — Buying books published by usQ1 — Can the books on this site be bought elsewhere?
A1 — Yes, they are listed for sale on amazon.co.uk and available to order from bookshops using the ISBN listed on the book's page. Books published since October 2021 are also listed for ordering through the Poetry Book Society. Q2 — Can I buy through this site without having a Paypal account? A2 — Yes, there is an option to use a credit or debit card if you click the Paypal buttons. You can also email your order to us through our CONTACT page, giving the title and author of the book(s) you would like to order, your address and the address where you would like us to send the book(s) and we will invoice you and send them out after receiving your cheque or direct bank transfer. Q 3 — How soon will I receive a book that I buy from this site? A3 — We aim to dispatch orders we receive by 2pm on the same day, to arrive within 3 working days. Q4 — How can I buy a book for delivery outside the UK? A There are instructions on each author's page, next to the Paypal buttons. If the author has their own website, buy the book there, or email them and ask to order the book directly from them. Otherwise, email us through our CONTACT page and we will arrange for the author to invoice you and send a copy of their book to the address you supply. Q5 — What do I do if I don't receive a book I've ordered from you? A5 — If your book doesn't arrive within 5 working days of your ordering it, please contact us and we will follow up with Royal Mail and send out a replacement. Q6 — What is your refund policy? A6 — We cannot refund or replace an order unless it has arrived damaged. If that happens, please CONTACT US and send us photos of the damaged book and its packaging as soon as you can, We'll then send you a replacement copy. Q7 — If a buyer mistakenly orders a book for non-uk a delivery, through a Paypal button, will they receive a refund? A7 — We regret that we can only refund 90% of a payment made in error, because there is a 10% handling charge by Paypal, which we have to pass on to you. |

FAQ 2 — Publishing your bookQ1—Can you publish my book if I live outside the UK?
A1—No, we can’t publish a book by an author who is not resident in the UK, for logistical reasons similar to the reason we can’t sell books abroad (see Q2, below). Q2—Will you be able to offer my book to buyers living outside the UK? A2—No, since the UK has left the EU we no longer have the required permissions to export books outside the UK. Q3—Should I submit my book as a printed manuscript? A3—No, we only accept emailed submissions as Word file attachments to dempseyandwindle@gmail.com. Please see further details here. Q4 What is your usual annual submission schedule? A3 — please check our SUBMISSIONS page Q5—If I submit a book for your consideration, how soon will you let me know whether or not you can accept it? A5—If we are currently open for submissions, we will get back to you within four weeks or less after acknowledging receipt. Q6—Do you have a contract with the authors whom you publish? A6—Yes, we and the author sign an agreement that sets out each side’s responsibilities. A sample copy of it is emailed to anyone who contacts us through this site asking for one. Q7—Does the author retain the copyright on their poems when they sign the contract? A7— We have first rights on the collection in the UK, that is, the whole collection in the form in which we edit it. But the author can have individual poems reprinted in journals, websites, anthologies and later collections, after signing our contract. We only ask for an acknowledgement of Dempsey & Windle as their first publisher. The author may have the whole book republished outside the UK without breaking the contract. Q8—Are there costs to the author when you publish their book? A8—There is an indirect cost in that we expect the author to purchase a minimum of 100 copies of their perfect-bound books from the initial print-run, at 50% of Recommended Retail Price (RRP) for their own use or resale. There is a 20% discount per copy if the author takes 150 or more perfect-bound books. The author’ purchase of copies of their books covers the cost of our editing and design services. Q9 — Do you offer editing or proof-reading services? A9 -- We don’t offer these services separately from our publishing service. The cost to you of buying copies of the book covers the cost of design and layout. We expect manuscripts submitted to us to have been edited and proofread before we read them, but if we find a need for further editing of the content when we publish your book, we will offer suggestions and make adjustments in collaboration with you the author. Further proof-reading is ongoing as we lay out the book’s content. You will receive PDFs of the layout at regular stages and will be responsible for the final proof-read before the printed proof is ordered. Q10—How many copies of a saddle-stitched (stapled) pamphlet is the author asked to purchase from the first print-run, and at what price)? A10—A minimum of 200 copies, at 40% of the RRP of the pamphlet. Q11—How do you fix the RRP of a book or pamphlet? A11—We fix the RRP according to the band it falls into, based on the number of pages (sides) the finished book contains. Q12—Can I get reprints of my book if I want more copies? A12—We can arrange for reprints in batches of 50 copies of perfect bound books (and in batches of 10+ saddle-stitched pamphlets) to be sent to you directly from the printer, for at least three years after the contract is signed. The price per copy will be 50% of RRP. Q13—When do you invoice an author? A13—We ask for a deposit of £250.00 when we begin to edit a file after we have accepted the book for publication. The balance is invoiced and payable when you as the author have accepted a bound proof copy of your book. Q14—Do you send out review copies? A14—We don’t include a promise to find reviewers of your book, but we will send out up to 5 review copies if we’re asked by reputable reviewers to do so. Q15—Who designs the covers of your publications? A15—We design a wrap-around cover which may include an image provided by you, which we will use at our discretion and in consultation with you. We do not guarantee a colour match with an image designed by you or a third party, and after consultation with you, our decision on the design of the cover will be final Q16—How will you promote my book if you publish it?
Q17—Do you enter any of your books for prizes or awards? A17—We do so at our own discretion and are willing to support authors who ask us to enter their books for national prizes if we feel that there is a chance of success. Q18—Do you pay royalties to authors? A18—At the end of each financial year (April) we pay the author 10% of RRP for every copy of their book that we sell through our website, and 5% for each copy sold through Amazon UK. We cannot pay royalties on orders through bookshops as they charge us 40% commission on every book we supply (Paypal and Amazon charge us less). Sales through the Poetry Book Society are also subject to a high discount and we cannot pay authors royalties on books ordered from their site. |
